Pool Area Ideas for Stylish Auckland Backyards
Pools are more than just a place to cool off — they can be the heart of your outdoor living space. Whether you’ve got a small plunge pool or a large family pool, new builds to pool renovations, the design around it makes all the difference.
Design Ideas
- Framing the Pool: Use some of the many stone, tiles (glass or ceramic) on offer for your pool coping. Concrete pavers are popular with coloured options and aggregate additions with a honed finish. Look for bull-nose or drop face edges. Hard-wood decking in wide format boards provides a softer relaxed feel. Styled concrete with a cantilevered edge provides a clean contemporary finish. A mix of materials, done well, creates zones and interest and can be used as a cost saving method. The colours, materials and finishes used around your pool area need to tie in with materials used in other areas of your garden. Always check for non-slip properties and if materials require sealing, an on-going maintenance requirement.
- Pool Fencing Styles: Choosing the right pool fence can make or break your new or existing pool area. Glass connects the pool to the rest of the garden. Combining materials can give you the best of both worlds. A partial glass fence mixed with other styles can visually open the area. Black metal recedes, particularly when planting is included. Smart off the shelf finn style panels are readily available. Bespoke pool fencing, allowing for curves in metal or timber softens angles. Timber batten can be dressed up or left to have a soft informal coastal appeal. All must comply with NZ pool fencing regulations.
- Planting for Privacy: Hedges, mid-height palms or a mix of natives & exotics can create natural screening without feeling boxed in. Raised beds and large pots with layered planting are clever additions to a pool area. Watch out for my upcoming blog on pool planting.
- Lounging Zones: Ensure there is enough room for usable lounging space within your fenced pool zone. Incorporate daybeds, pool loungers or outdoor lounge suites to make the pool area feel like a resort. A pergola works hard, providing screening, privacy and shade, cantilevered umbrellas are another great option. Install umbrella sleeves in the paving or decking for a space saving seamless finish.
- Lighting: Subtle garden lighting turns the pool into a night-time feature, a jewel set in the garden, extending its use beyond hot summer days.
Pro Tip: Storage: Pools come with a lot of equipment. Pool house placement, pool cover storage, tools & toy storage, shouldn’t be an afterthought. You want the pool to be the standout feature, not the shed. Considered design before placing the pool will ensure this is resolved.
